Lattice Distortion Mediated Paramagnetic Relaxation in High-Spin High-Symmetry Molecular Magnets
نویسنده
چکیده
Field-dependent maxima in the relaxation rate of the magnetic molecules Mn12-Ac and Fe8-tacn have commonly been ascribed to some resonant tunneling phenomenon. We argue instead that the relaxation can be understood as purely due to phonons. The rate maxima arise because of a Jahn-Tellerlike distortion caused by the coupling of lattice phonons to degenerate Zeeman levels of the molecule at the top of the barrier. The binding energy of the distorted intermediate states lowers the barrier height and increases the relaxation rate. A nonperturbative calculation of this effect is carried out for a model system. An approximate result for the field variation near a maximum is found to agree reasonably with experiment. 76.30.-v, 76.20.+q, 75.80.+q, 75.60.Ej Typeset using REVTEX

Magnetic dipolar ordering and relaxation in the high-spin molecular cluster compound Mn6
Few examples of magnetic systems displaying a transition to pure dipolar magnetic order are known to date. As was recently shown, within the newly discovered class of single-molecule magnets, quite attractive examples of dipolar magnetism may be found. The molecular cluster spins and thus their dipolar interaction energy can be quite high, leading to reasonably accessible ordering temperatures ...
متن کاملCompetition between photoexcitation and relaxation in spin-crossover complexes in the frame of a mechanoelastic model
In this paper we use a recently proposed elastic model in order to study the competition between linear photoexcitation and cooperative relaxation in spin-crossover molecular magnets. The difference in molecular size between the two possible spin states, that is, the high-spin and the low-spin states, respectively, induces distortions of the crystal lattice. These determine the elastic interact...
متن کاملStrong spin-phonon coupling between a single-molecule magnet and a carbon nanotube nanoelectromechanical system.
Magnetic relaxation processes were first discussed for a crystal of paramagnetic transition ions. It was suggested that mechanical vibrations of the crystal lattice (phonons) modulate the crystal electric field of the magnetic ion, thus inducing a 'direct' relaxation between two different spin states. Direct relaxation has also been predicted for single-molecule magnets with a large spin and a ...
متن کاملAnisotropy barrier reduction in fast-relaxing Mn12 single-molecule magnets
An angle-swept high-frequency electron paramagnetic resonance HFEPR technique is described that facilitates efficient in situ alignment of single-crystal samples containing low-symmetry magnetic species such as single-molecule magnets SMMs . This cavity-based technique involves recording HFEPR spectra at fixed frequency and field, while sweeping the applied field orientation. The method is appl...
متن کاملQuantum rotational band model for the Heisenberg molec - ular magnet { Mo 72 Fe 30 }
– We derive the low temperature properties of the molecular magnet {Mo72Fe30}, where 30 Fe paramagnetic ions occupy the sites of an icosidodecahedron and interact via isotropic nearest-neighbour antiferromagnetic Heisenberg exchange. The key idea of our model (J.S. & M.L.) is that the low-lying excitations form a sequence of “rotational bands”, i.e., for each such band the excitation energies d...
